পরিশিষ্ট যদিও লিনসোটেনের ভ্রমণ বৃত্তান্তে অনেক অবান্তর কথা ও ভ্ৰম আছে। তথাপি অনেক দিক হইতে র্তাহার বৃত্তান্ত যে অত্যন্ত মূল্যবান তাহ সহজেই প্ৰতীয়মান হইবে । “তারতবর্ষে পর্তুগীজ” (The Portuguese in India ) নামক গ্ৰন্থ প্ৰণেতা প্ৰথিতনামা ঐতিহাসিক ড্যানভার্স ( Danvers ) (शे नलश्च८क् शिथिब्रांCछ्न् ( विङौघ्रं श्७ ; > • « शृेष्ठै ) :- “Here existed about this period, I 586-96, in the States one John Hughen Van Lin Schoten, son of a plain burgher of West Frigsland to whom the Dutch are indebted, not only for the information which first led to their entering upon the direct Indian trade, but also for many contributions to science and the progress of civilisation. Reing seized with a strong desire to travel, he left home at the age of I7 and procecded to Lisbon. After a residence there of about 2 years, he went to India in the suite of the Archbisop of Goa, and remained in that country for nearly i3 years, during which time by means of cares' and diligent observation, he amassed a large fund of information on almost every branch of eneuiry, including specially the products which formed the material of a great traffic, the mealaeof transportation, and they cause of commerce.
