so there is only one religion.” And what is this One Religion but Love of God and Love of Man? In fact creed or dogma is nothing compared with love. Compared with the knowledge which God has of religious truth, the difference between the knowledge of the greatest philosopher and that of the rudest savage sinks into the greatest insignificance. Why then fight so much about dogma? It is no doubt our duty to bring over other men to what we consider to be the true religion, but we should do it by means of argument and gentle persuasion instead of displaying the least odium theologicum.

 There is an astonishing agreement between the pious sayings of pious men of all ages and countries, but innumerable differences of opinion in point of doctrine between them. Those pious sayings meet with greater response from our souls than their particular opinions on particular of religious doctrine. Their songs and prayers to God under whatever name addressed, and their lessons on the moral duties of man invariably find a ready way to our hearts, but not so all their opinions on points of religious doctrine. The pious sayings of even such pious idolaters as Ramprasad of Bengal, Tulsidas of Upper India and Tukarat of Maharashtra invariably meet with response from our hearts but not so all expositions of mere creed or doctrine by preachers of monotheistic religions.
