THE BENGALEE, THE 24th April 1880. KOYLASH KUSHUM. AN Opera in Bengali. By Babu Nogendra Nath Ghose. Second Edition. Ori. ental press — the plot of this interesting opera is borrowed from an incident described by Kalidasa in his world-renowned Kumara Sambara. Our readers are all familiarly acquainted with the story of the destruction of Madana in his attempts to disturb the Yoga of Mohadeva on the summits of the Himalayas. This story the author has seized for the theme of his book and has explained it with a skill and cleverness which do him considerable credit. Some portions of the book, to wit, the lamentations of Rati, and the song of Giribashini welcoming the Orient Sun, are really poetical. Without any further remarks—for they seem to be superfluous—we may at once mention that the public have already evinced their just appreciation of the merits of this little work. It has several times been brought on the stage of the Bengal Theatre and on each occasion the house was full. We are told that so much success was never witnessed before, nay, not even in the case of Adarasa Sati or Sati-ki-Kalomkini, the two most popular operas now in rage amongst the theatrical public of the town.
