At the crossing. II. E are now passing through a period of transition. The old-world ideals are changing and people are just now bewilderedthey are just groping their way towards other ideals. Signs are not wanting to show that a change is wanted-nay, a change has become an absolute necessity. On the 4th August last at the intercessory service held to mark the third anniversary of the declaration of war on (termany, the Bishop of Calcutta began the gervice at St. Paul's Cathedral with the following words :- “After three years of war, we again gather together before God. The outlook is changed : especially is it changed since last year. Are we also changed? As we look back on the long three years and recount the events, whit strikes us most Time and again we have been held back from victory by circumstances which were not or could not be expected. From the time that the raiders of Scarborough escaped from under the guns of our grand fleet in a sudden storm of rain to the time that the failing light impaired the victory of Jutland, the Navy has, as the saying goes, had no luck. The offensive on land on the Somme and on the A more has been at critical moments held up by Weather. This is all known now to any one who can read and think. What was God saying all this while to our nation and Empire? You must change, you must change, before I can give you victory.' 'You must change is addressed to the nation as a whole and to all the individuals of it. As a nation we have changed some things, we are willing to change others. But still the demand continues. The year 1917 opened with the prospect of decisive ailitary success in Curope. All men's minds in Great Britain were elated and expeetant. But instead of what we hoped, we found the Russians paralysed by revolution and the campaign in Europe thus rendered inconclusive. This train of events might have led to the conclusion of a peace unfavourable to the Allies. But that was not permitted. The United States of America joined with us, and their adhesion makes the continuation of the War certain. Thus our nation is granted another chance to change itself. The same divine demand is reiterated, "You must change before I can give you victory.” Luet us begin our service to-day with a confession of our sins, both national and personal, and let us beg of God to give us a change of heart, and a loyal willingness to advance with a changed heart to live a changed life.' Further on in the course of his address he said :- “The world of politics and newspapers may talk of that peace which is the absence of war : but we must talk with God of his peace which passeth all understanding. We need that peace in our hearts, in our homes, in our Church, and then it will spread to our nation and to other nations. If we, like God, willed that no man should perish but that all should come to a knowledge of the truth, what a change would come over national life and international relations The Lord is loving unto every man and his mercy is over all his works. If we had that spirit, how difficult it would be for quarrels to arise How different would be our objects in private and public life Then we should know the peace of God whieh passeth all understanding.'
