8V9 eo ঐতিহাসিক চিত্ৰ । ষ্টির চাইলে রাজবংশেরও ‘ যথার্থ নামকরণ হয়। আমরা এক্ষণে উহার আলোচনাতেই প্ৰবৃত্ত হইতেছি। পৰ্ব্বতের নাম পঞ্চকোট হইলে ইহার অর্থ কিরূপ হয়, প্ৰথমে তাহাই দেখা যাউক । কোটি বা কোঠ শব্দে বেষ্টন অথবা দুর্গ বা গড় বুঝায়। এক্ষণে পঞ্চকোট পৰ্ব্বতের পাঁচটি বেষ্টন বা তাহাতে পাঁচটি দুর্গ ছিল কিনা তাহার কোন প্ৰমাণ পাওয়া যায় না। ইতার পাদদেশে যেখানে রাজবংশের প্রাচীন রাজধানী ছিল, তাহা অবশ্য দুর্গাকারে বেষ্টিত ছিল। সেই দুর্গেরও পাঁচটি বেষ্টন ছিল কিনা, তাহা বুঝা যায় না। কনিংহাম সাহেব পঞ্চকোট শব্দে পঞ্চ প্রাচীরবেষ্টিত দুর্গ অর্থ করিতে চাহেন। কিন্তু সেই পাঁচটি প্রাচীর স্থির করিতে “তঁহাকে অনেক কষ্টকল্পনা করিতে হষ্টিয়াছে। আমরা নিম্নে কনিংহাম সাহেবের উক্তি উদ্ধত করিতেছি ;- “About 1o miles to the South-west of Borakar stands the high solitary hill of Pachet ; at its South-eastern foot is the fort of Pachet, once the residence of the Rajas of Pachet, now deserted and in disrepair; the name of this fort is said to be a contraction of Ponchokot, and the explanation of the name now given is, that the Rajas of Pachet reigned over five Rajas but the word clearly means five forts, and I consider the name to have reference rather to the number of walls that de pedin the citadel-'Kot'There are four sets of walls, each within the other, surrounding the kot on the west, south and east, the north being depended by the hill itself, at the toe of the slope of which the citadel stands; but, beyond the last line of the walls of the fort, tradition
