ADVERTISEMENT. THIS compilation of Sungskrit proverbs which have grown into popular use among the natives of Bengal was made by Baboo Neel-rutna Haldar, and an edition printed at his own private press. A second edition appearing desirable, I have inserted a translation of them into English, with the hope.of aiding the researches of our countrymen, into the popular lamguage of Bengal. These proverbs consist generally of portions of Sungskrit poetry, which have been gradually incorporated with the language of Bengal to such an extent as to have become familiar even to those who are unacquainted with the source from which they are drawn, It has appeared advisable therefore to elucidate them by giving the entire couplet or couplets to which they belong, and where they are connected with some popular story, to insert the story ifself. They will furnish the English student with a key to many of the popular sayings which he findsils his intercourse with the people ofthis province, and also explain many of the maxims which have exercised a very considerable influence on the habits and conduct of _
