4 o! his wisdom and learning was so great, that the àueen of Sheba came from a distant land, probably the southern part of Arabia, to see him, and to be instructed by him. He built a temple on Mount Moriah, at Jerusalem, where the ark was placed and sacrifices were offered. Three times a year the "Hebrews, from every part of Israel, came up to this temple to worship God. The government was well administered; an army was in constant readiness to defend the country; and the trade, which was carried on by way of the Red Sea to India, greatly increased the wealth of the king and people. Splendid palaces were erected on Zion, and several strong and beautiful cities were built 岛 Solomon. One of thèse, called Tadmor by the Hebrews, and Palmyra by the Greeks, was situated in the eastern part of Syria. This city was afterwards much cclebrated, and its ruins are now to be seen, in the midst of a desert of sand.
