56. Pup. . What is the cause of this regular movement of the waters, and what is its use? $. * * * Tut. The ebbing and flowing of the sea are occasioued, by the attraction of the sun and moon upon the waters of the earth, which you will be better able to comprehend when you grow older. This movement of the water preserves it from corruption, which would take place if it were in a state of rest and stagnation. The tides are also exceedingly useful to navigation and ©öHTMièᏑᏟē , - - Pup. How does it happen that the waters of the sea are not increased by the numerous rivers which are constantly flowing into it Tut. Because as much water is evaporated off its surface, by the action of the sun, as all the rivers discharge into it. Pup. Is not the depth of the sea very great? Tut. It is not of equal depth every where : in some places navigators can find no ground with a line of more than seven hundred and eighty fathoms, or fifteen hundred and sixty yards.
