বঙ্কিম-কণিকা which could not be better denoted than by the famous lines “Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime.” And the question really is as between Words of one. or a few everlasting and all sufficient Rishis and that more concrete model : the Life of an incarnate God or Avatar: the LIVES of a few prophets, Rishis, Saints and Great Men. The question thus put can evoke but only one answer : We need both these things. And the problem of our day is I think to convince the orthodox Brahman Community of the importance of that answer. Bankim's commemoration signifies the commemoration as of a great man, not of a Rishi : And yet the commemoration is something more than that of the Pitris by any of their descendants. This commemoration is a living fact ; but to give it true vitality it is necessary that oriental methods should not be departed from. Turning next to the commemoration of the Pitris, I find that it comprises two elements.
