કરીન્દ્ર ] বাজলা ভাষা 分为 to Bengali, which is one of the modern developments of Sanskrit, all the imperfections of the mother tongue that have been cast off for good. What a terrible legacy would a wholesale appropriation of the Sanskrit vocabulary leave to posterity ? Men of capacity little think of the labor that the acquisition of a language costs; and of this labor the heaviest part is that required in mastering the vocabulary, which, consisting as it does for the most part, of arbitrary symbols, is dull, dreary matter to learn. Where arbitrary symbols furnish a key to valuable knowledge, the symbols ought surely to be learnt. In the present case, however, the labors spent on the acquisition of words would be vain, meaningless labor. What is the good of learning a new word where one does not learn a corresponding new idea with it 2 Perfection of language requires that no two words should express exactly the same idea, and that no two ideas should have the same name. No human language is indeed perfect like this it is true. But this is no reason why we should work the other way, and go on sanctioning and accumulating defects. স্কুল কথা, সাহিত্য কি জন্য ? গ্রন্থ কি জন্য ? যে পড়িবে তাহার বুঝিবার জন্য । না বুঝিয়া, বহি বন্ধ করিয়া, পাঠক ত্ৰাহি ত্ৰাহি করিয়া ডাকিবে, বোধ হয় এ উদ্দেশ্যে কেহ গ্রন্থ লিখে না । যদি এ কথা সত্য হয়, তবে যে ভাষা সকলের বোধগমা, অথবা যদি সকলের বোধগম্য কোন ভাষা না থাকে, তবে যে ভাষা অধিকাংশ লোকেৰ বোধগমা, তাহাতেই গ্রন্থ প্রণীত হওয়া উচিত। যদি কোন লেখকেৰ এমন উদ্দেশ্য থাকে যে, আমার গ্রন্থ দুই চাবি শব্দ পণ্ডিতে বুকুক, আর কাহারও বুঝিবার প্রয়োজন নাই, তবে তিনি গিয়া চুরুহ ভাষায় গ্রন্থপ্রণয়নে প্রবৃত্ত হউন। যে উাহার যশ করে করুক, আমরা কখন যশ করিব না। তিনি তুই একজনের উপকার করিলে করিতে পারেন, কিন্তু আমরা তাহাকে পরোপকার-কাতর-খল-স্বভাব পাষণ্ড বলিব । তিনি জ্ঞানবিতরণে প্রবৃত্ত হইয়া চেষ্টা করিয়া অধিকাংশ পাঠককে আপনার জ্ঞানভাণ্ডার হইতে দূরে রাখেন। যিনি যথার্থ গ্রন্থকার তিনি জানেন যে, পরোপকার ভিন্ন গ্রন্থপ্রণয়নের উদ্দেশু নাই , জনসাধারঞ্চে জ্ঞানবৃদ্ধি বা চিত্তোল্পতি ভিন্ন রচনার-মস্ত উদ্বেগু নাই,
