७१९ o दछकथत्रि [ চৈত্র বাণিজ্যই ইংলণ্ডের লক্ষ্মী। ইংলণ্ড ও স্কটলণ্ড সমুদ্রবেষ্টিত বলিয়াই ইংরেজ জাতির বাণিজ্যের এরূপ প্রাধান্ত । জর্মণ জাতি, বিদ্যা ও শস্ত্রবলে ইংরেজদের অপেক্ষা বলীয়ান, অধ্যবসায়ে ও বুদ্ধিবলে এবং বাণিজ্যম্পুহায় তাহাদের সমান ; অথচ বণিকৃবৃত্তিতে তাহাদের অপেক্ষ নিকৃষ্ট। ইহাঁর প্রধান কারণ এই যে সমুদ্রতীরে জর্মনির উপকূল অত্যন্ত্র। ইংলণ্ডে মৃদঙ্গার ও লৌহ প্রচুর পরিমাণে পাওয়া যায় ; ইহা ইংলণ্ডের শিল্পনৈপুণ্য ও বাণিজ্যবিস্তারের এক প্রধান কারণ বটে। কিন্তু বিস্তৃত উপকূল না থাকিলে বাণিজ্যে এতাধিক শ্ৰীবৃদ্ধি হইত না। ইংরেজরা দ্বীপবাসী বলিয়াই রাজার স্বেচ্ছাচার দমন করিতে সক্ষম হইয়াছিলেন। বিজাতীয় শক্রভয় না থাকায় নির্দিষ্ট বেতনভোগী সেনা রাখিতে হয় নাই। ইউরোপের অন্যান্য দেশ রক্ষার জন্য নিয়ত বেতনভোগী সেনা রাখিতে হইত এবং তত্ত্বদেশের রাজগণ সেনার বলে স্বেচ্ছাচারী হইয়াছিলেন। ইংলণ্ডের সৌভাগ্যে তাহা ঘটে নাই। (২) ' সমুদ্রে মৎস্ত ধরা সহস্ৰ সহস্র ইংরেজ ধীবরের উপজীবিকা। অভ্যাস বশতঃ ইহার অতি নিপুণ নাবিক, এবং সামান্ত শিক্ষা পাইলে রণতরীর অত্যুৎকৃষ্ট সৈনিক হয়। (৩) (২) যাহারা ইংলণ্ডের ইতিহাস বিশেষ মনোযোগ করিয়া পড়েন নাই তাহাদিগকে এ বিষয় সংক্ষেপে বুঝাইয়া দেওয়া কঠিন । মেকলে লিখিয়াছেন “This singular felicity [exemption from despotism established by a standing army] she owed chiefly to her insular situation.
