MORTON'S DICTIONARY, was published in 1828, pp. 6oo, Rs. 6 with Bengali Synonyms and an English translation-it is very valuable, containing Io,7OO words, it omits however all exotics. JOY GOPAL’S PERSIAN AND BENGALL DICTIONARY, 1838, 2,5OO words, has fallen with the decay of the Persian language. In 1838, two Persian and Bengali Vocabularies were published. One by Lakhmi Narayan, Sudar Amin of Purnea, he wished to substitute Bengali for Persian terms in the Court, and gave 200 copies of his work with this view to Government, for distribution in the zillahs, but the rapid decay of the Persian renders them almost useless now, except for Court terms. P., English and Bengali, pp. 200, appeared; the names are spelled according to the Arabic mode and not according to the Hebrew. It was designed to form the basis of an uniform method of spelling the proper names of Scripture in the language of India. In 1840, JAGANARAYAN MUKARJYEA. published a Dictionary of 12,Ooo words.
