WYAVASTHA-DARPANA. 8慧8 VI. The precept enjoining the production of a son being positive, it results that the contravention of it, is the cause of an offence.—D, Miln, Chap. J. § 0. VII. Heaven awaits not one destitute of a son.--Ibid. VIII. Since a son delivers (tráyate) his father from the hell called ‘not,’ therefore he is named puttra by the Self-Existent himself—Munu and Wishnu. IX. Certain hell is named “put '; and he, who is destitute of offspring is tormented in hell; a son is therefore called puttra,because he delivers his father from those regions of horror.—Hārīta, X. A father is exonerated in his life time from the debt to his own ancestors, upon seeing the countenance of a living son: he becomes entitled to heaven by the birth of his son, and devolves on him his own debt, The sacrificial hearth, the three Pedas, and sacrifices rewarded with ample gratuities, have not the sixteenth part of the efficacy of the birth of an eldest sun.--Shankhu and likhita. By a son, a man eonquers worlds; by a son's soil, he enjoys immortality; and, afterwards, by the son of a grandson, he reaches the solar abode.—Asans, Shankha, sikhita, "ishnu, Jashishtha, and Ilúrita. The sage Manilapála, desining admission to a region of bliss, was repulsed by the guards who watch the abode of progenitors, because he had no male issue—Mahābhārata. See Colet, Dig. vol. Márkandeya replied: salvation is not for one destitute of male issue, both in the next world and in this: O excellent saints, those, who are fathers of male issue, by means of their own sons, and those of brothers, attain heaven.
