One special advantage which this style possesses is that it enables the author to embody in a small compass a vast amount of matter on the one hand, and the students to master the subject with comparative ease on the other. The author's en deavours in this direction have been fully crowned with success. The book is divided into twenty .seven chapters, and contains an ela'borate introduction and an appendix besides. It is not possible for a journal îike the Vishak Darpan to review all We shall the salient points only. The introduction has been written . very carefully and exhaustively. Having some practical knowledge of the dif. ficulties under which medical practi tioners labour in this country while know no other book on the giving expert evidence in law-courts, the author has quoted the necessary sections of the Indian Evidence Act and have illustrated them with examples from his own experience. We _ SAIRE subject in which this method has been adopted. ভিষক-দৰ্পণ । [ মে, ১৯০৪ accidental deaths are due to hanging, drowning and poisoning ; and the author has dealt with these subjects most exhaustively. In diagnosing cases where strong grounds of suspicion may exist, he has tried to explain them by referring to cases which came under his own experience. In illustration we wish to refer to the following extracts: DIAGNOSIS OF DEATH BY HANGING, “The following case is of great interest, it occurred in February 1901, and is not included in the 128 cases previously mentioned. The police report and the evidence of the principal witnesses at the inquest were as follows :-The deceased, a youth of 16 years, was in the habit of visiting a prostitute, named Soshi, who finding he had no money, refused to receive him any longer. On the 3oth January, he went to her house in the evening, she turned him out, he left in a rage, saying he would take his own life. He returned about midnight and as he was in a quarrelsome mood, Soshi gave him some milk and betel. After a time, he went to answer a call of nature, Soshi walked down stairs with him to point out the place. While he was in the latrine, she went to the room of another prostitute, and told her about the youth, his bad temper and threats. While the women were talking, the youth went upstairs. Soshi followed within a few minutes, and on entering her room, saw the youth . . . . în this country a great majority of hanging by a cloth round his neck,
