In the later writings of lhe poci, Bhababhuii, can also be found a detailed description of Patala, i.e., of this underworld. Whalever might have been the significance of this reference ło Patala, I am sure the modern world, and sill more ihe geologists of to-day, will hardly believe in such things. Of the various views held by people in the Ensi about the causes of earlhquake I shall mention hero only a few. Some say that the huge animals living under the sea cause earthquake by their movemenis. Oihers hold ihai ihe earth resis upon eight elephanis, and thai, when one or olher of them changes position, the earth quakes; while, in the opinion of another school ol men, carihquakes are caused by winds. They say that, when two currents ol wind travelling with great velocity shrike each other from opposile directions, they are directed iowards the surface of the earth and fall upon it with a remendous force and thus make it rock and sway.
