মুখবন্ধ। (১) জয়দেবের জীবন বৃত্তান্ত । মহাকবি জয়দেব রাঢ়দেশে বীরভূম জেলার অন্তর্গত কোম্পূণ বিন্ধ গ্রামে ব্ৰাহ্মণ-কুলে জন্ম গ্ৰহণ করেন। ঐ কেন্দুবিশ্বগ্রাম এক্ষণে ‘কেন্দুলি” বলিয়াই অধিক প্ৰসিদ্ধ, এবং উহা অজয় মদের উত্তরে স্থিত । তঁহার পিতার নাম তোজদেব, মাতার নাম ধামাদেবী, এবং পত্নীর নাম পদ্মাবতী দেবী। তিনি কোনু সময়ে প্রাদুর্ভূত হইয়াছিলেন, তাহা নিশ্চয় করা দুঃসাধ্য । সার উইলিয়াম জোন্স অনুমান করেন যে জয়দেব মহাকবি কালিদাসের পুর্বে প্রানুভূত হইয়াছিলেনষ্ট। কিন্তু এই মত নিতান্ত অগ্ৰাহী ; কেননা উক্ত মহাত্মা কোন প্রমাণ দ্বারা এই মত দৃঢ়ীভূত করেন নাই, কেবল মাত্র একটা উদ্ভট কথার উপর নির্ভর করিয়াছেন। কালিদাসের পূর্বে রাঢ় ও গৌড়দেশের
- The loves of Krishna and Radha, or the reciprocal attrace tion between the divine goodness and the human soul, are told at large in the tenth book of the Bhagbat, and are the subject of a little pastoral drama, entitled “Gitagovinda ; it was the work of Jayadeva, who flourished, it is said, before Kalidasa, and was born, as he tells us himself, in Kendtli, which many believe to be in Kalinges but since there is a town of a similar name in Bards wan (Beerbhoom p) the natives of it insist that the finest lyric poet of India was their countryman, and celebrate in honour of him, an annual Jubilee, passing a whole night in representing his drama, and in singing his beautiful songs.-Asiatic Researches
