With the actors we have, we cannot expect very great amount of success; but I fancy it would create a deeper sensation than any Play yet produced. If all our actors were like yourself, it would be a diffrent thing. Most of the Shakesperean Dramas were no better acted, at first, I suspect, than ours are. As for the male characters, that is another inconveni ence of the Plot. I have tried to represent Juggut Sing as I find him in History, a somewhat silly and volup tuous fellow ; Bheemsing as a sad, serious man. The other characters are invented, but I had to conforme them to the principal characters. As for Dhanadass, I never dreamt of making him the counterpart of Yago. The plot does not admit of such a character, even if I could invent it-which I gravely doubt I' wish Ballender to be serious and light, like the "Bas tard" in King John. Dhanadass is an ordinary rogue, indeed, but he will do admirably, if you take him by the hand As for the females, there I am on my own element, and I hope you will like them all. The queen of such an unfortunate Prince, as the Rana Bheemsing, cannot but be sad and grave ; the princess, I hope, is dignified, yet gentle. But that Madanika is my favourite. Kissen Cumari falling in love with a man she has never seen before, is by no means uncommon in our own ancient History or Fable; the name of Rukmini will occur to you at once ; I believe there are allusions to her in the VO
