(Χίν, ). There is a romance in the life of Sadhu Gokul and in the history of the family house and temple at Baghbazar with which many are familiar but which it is a pleasure to recall. The temple, as all citizens of Calcutta know, is that of Madan Mohan. In its sanctuary is established the image of Madan Mohan, which is that of Shri Krishna, and which is in general etimation "the luck' of the family, The inage was installed and the rich fane raised by Sadhu Gokul. The image, which is compound of gold with a slight almixture of eight other mystic metals, is of very great antiquity and sanctity. it belonged, at the time we arefwriting of, to Maharaja Gopal Singh, of Bishnupur, in Bankura. The fitting worship and up-keep of Shri Madan Mohon entail a very heavy and unremitting expenditure, alike for the ritual of service, and for the numerous persons who have to be fed and clothed in honour of the God. Maharaja Gopal Singi, ünfortunately for him, fell ön evil days. The up-keep of the shrine became a burden that he eould not support, and he was willing to do much for a sufficiently important cash consideration. His mind turned to the pious and wealthy Sadhu Gokul. As a result of negociation the Maharaja agreed to allow the image of the God to pay a perpetual visit to the new temple in Baghbazar, there to be honoured in fitting style, whilst the Maharaja received three lakhs of fupees to console bim for his empty shrine. With the coming of the image there came increased fortune
