The Chandney Chowk is one of the oldest and most familiar landmarks of Calcutta. Its history is perhaps not as ancient as that of Barabazar, which is mentioned in the very early history of Calcutta as a seat of trade, but Chandney along with New Chinabazar, to-day plays an important part in the commercial life of Calcutta. It is, so to speak, the people's market in the metropolis. Being situated ventrally between the northern and Asouthern divisions of the city, it is resorted to by multitudes of Europeans and Indians. The Sir Stuart Hogg Market, better known as the New Market, no doubt, attracts large numbers of customers, but, for all that, Chandney exercises a peculiar fascination upon people. The place is crowded from morning to night; the shopkeepers are perpetually unpacking new goods; and altogether a large amount of money passes hands daily from customer to middleman and from middileman to trader. Chandney, in short, is famous for its cosmopolitanism. Here you may say the most fashionable lady bargaining for things with as much warmth as the poorest labourer.
