The faunily, it will have been seen, has been noted for religious and charitable benefactions ever since it established itself in Calcutta. The very fact of Gokul Mitra having parted with three lacs of rupees for the sake of the image of Madan Mohon would show his fervent piety as a Hindu. According to popular tradition, it was Madan Mohon that built the fortune of the family.
