We think, the services which Babu Vihari Lala Mitra has rendered to the cause of the literature, religion, morality and social reform, as also his honoured position in Hindu society, his munificent public benefactions, his exemplarycharacter and his devoted and unswerving loyalty to the Crown, entitle him to some fitting recognition at the hands of Government. The family of which he is so worthy a member, has played a conspicuous part in the early history of British rule in India. One of his ancestors, as we mentioned yesterday, held the honourable positfon of Lambardar under the East India Company. The munificence and piety of Sadhu Gokul Mitra are the themes of Bengali folklore. In points of wealth and position, Babu Vihari Lala Mitra occupies a prominent place in the Indian society of Calcutta. Be is the owner of a large property in this city as well as in the Mofussil, yielding a large annual income. But it is not so much his wealth and position as his intrinsic worth that entitles him, in our opinion, to a suitable public distinction. Of course, a man like him should have been honoured by Government long ago, but the omission, we take it, is only due to the fact that Babu Vihari Lala, Mitra has been too modest and unassuming to make his good works known.
