To the disinterested observer in India, it seems that the white man is becoming very much discounted under the aegis of the British “Baj.” Time was when the Britisher, as conqueror and ruler of this land, enjoyed certain rights and privileges, and one of these was his right to be tried by jury. Quite recently we have had the spectacle of the unanimous verdicts of juries, acquitting Europeans, charged with offences triable by these tribunals, set aside, not because there was any outcry against such acquittals, or on the application of the prosecution, but on appeal by the Government against the acquittal. To quote one specific instance, we may refer to the trial of Mr. Rose, of Dulu Tea Estate, Cachar. The relations between Europeans and natives are becoming acutely antagonistic, and this racial gulf is being widened by the violent writings of the native press. The time has arrived to look into this question a little more closely. The unprovoked assaults on Europeans, especially soldiers, are becoming increasingly frequent. Europeans are insulted, abused and jeered at by the lowest type of natives and if they retaliate, they are set upon by & mob. If the European gets badly mauled, nothing is done, no one cares, but if in the brawl he happens to seriously hurt one of his numerous assailants, in the exercise of his right of self-defence, he is tried for his life and liberty.
