The publication of the famous pamphlet “The Old Man's Hope,' has given the book under notice its present name, though the scheme of a Maha Hindu Samiti, or a great union of Hindus, which it embodies, was commenced to be written, so early as 188I. A Bengali translation of the scheme appeared in the Bengali periodical, Navajiban, in July, 1886. The original English is now published, and forms the subject of the present notice. The scheme is exceedingly solemn in its character and catholic in its spirit. The "Old Hindu," who has broached the idea, though physically old, is mentally, morally, and religiously more energetic and enthusiastic than most of the younger members of the Hindu Community.
