তৃতীয় পরিচ্ছেদ ১৮২৩ খ্ৰীষ্টাব্দের আগষ্ট মাসে লর্ড আমহাষ্ট গবর্ণর জেনেরালের পদে প্ৰতিষ্ঠিত হন। ১৮২৫ সালেব অক্টোবর মাসে কলিকাতাব সন্নিকটেই এক হত্যাকাণ্ড ঘটে, তাহাতে হিন্দুবিধবাগণের সহমরণ প্ৰথা নিবারণ সম্বন্ধে তুমুল আন্দোলন উপস্থিত হয় ; এবং সহমরণ প্ৰথা নিবারিত না হইলেও তৎসম্বন্ধে কতকগুলি নিয়ম স্থাপিত হয়। লর্ড আমহাষ্টেবি পত্নী একজন মনস্বিনী ও সুলেখিকা স্ত্রীলোক ছিলেন। তিনি প্ৰতিদিনের ঘটনাবলীীব দৈনিক লিপি লিখিয়া রাখিতেন। তন্দ্বারা সে সময়কার অনেক কথা জানিতে পাবা যায়। সেই দৈনিক লিপি হইতে উক্ত হত্যাকাণ্ডেব নিম্নলিখিত বিবরণ উদ্ধৃত <ềC\5(s :ー "A young man having died of cholera his widow resolved to mount the funeral pile. The usual preparations were made, and the licences procured from the magistrate. The fire was lighted by the nearest relations ; when the flame reached her, however, she lost courage, and amid a volume of smoke and the deafening screams of the mob, tomtoms, drums etc., she contrived to slip down unperceived, and gained a neighbouring Jungle. At first she was not missed; but when the smoke subsided, it was discovered she was not on the pile.
