I 96 I 42. Astonishing instance of sidelity. Peterborough, a noble English General, was engaged together with a German general in besieging the town of Barcelona. The Governor offered to capitulate, and came to the gates to settle the conditions with the English General. Before the articles were signed, loud shouts were heard in the streets; on which the governor reproached the general saying, while we are settling the terms of capitulation with unsuspecting honor, your soldiers are faithlessly entering the town by the ramparts, and are committing every kind of outrage. You do injustice to the English, said the general; the treachery is committed by the German troops, my allies, but permit me to enter the town, and I will immediately repress the outrage, and faithfully return to the gates of the town and finish the terms of capitulation.
