Séplement to the Sahitya AParishad Patrika. Sraban, 3oze. To THE PRESIDENT, S BANGIYA SAHIYA PARSHAD). R I. At a meeting of the Parishad held on the 26th August 1894, we the undersigned were requested to consider the following proposals and submit a report thereon. (I) That it is desirable that in the Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University, candidates be examined in their own vernaculars in such subjects as History, Geography and Mathematics on text-books written in such vernaculars. (l) That it is desirable that for the F. A. and B. A. Examinations of the Calcutta University, vernacular text-books be prescribed with those in the Classical second languages, viz.-Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian ; or that in such examinations, Composition in and Translation into the vernaculars be made a part of the required test. 2. Before submitting our report we thought it desirable to elicit the opinions of educationists and leaders of the Hindu and Mahomedan counmunities, and to that end issued a circular letter to about 2 oo gentlemen. We requested them to give their opinions in reply to the following questions:- (I) Whether you approve, and if so, to what extent, of the proposal to make the vernacular languages the medium of instruction up to the Entrance examination of the Calcutta University in the following subjects, viz.:- History, Geography, and Mathematics; or whether you would for the present, restrict the proposal up to the standard of Middle English Examination, i. e. to the fourth class of Entrance Schools, (II) Whether you approve, and, if so, to what extent, of the proposal to make the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, not in substitution of Sanskrit, Arabic, or Persian, but in addition to these languages. Seventy gentlemen have responded to our call and have favoured us with their opinions. 3. The above tentative proposals were laid before the Parishad with a view to secure two objects, viz.:- (1) to improve vernacular literature and develop a taste for it among the educated classes. (II) to effect an improvement in the system of education and general enlightenment of the people,
