We do not think there is much force in any of the objections stated above. In the opinion of several persons whose opinion carries great weight, the proposal, if given effect to, far from weakening the students in English, as suggested in the fourth and fifth objections, would rather strengthen them in that language, by checking the system of cram now unfortunately in vogue and by setting free a great deal of mental energy, now wasted for the extended study of English literature. If the above view is correct, it is difficult to see why students instructed on the vernacular basis should not be able to compete for the F.A. Examination as has been broadly stated in the third objection. 8. As regards the first objection, it can scarcely be said that there are no text books in Bengali which may suitably take the place of English. ones in the Entrance Examination, and we think there are now suitable books in Hindi and Urdu as well. It will appear from the following comparative table that, students having Bengali for their vernacular language form the great majority of Entrance candidates, being 7 o' 1 per cent of the total number in 1893. After them come candidates speaking Urdu and Hindi who form respectively 91 and 64 per cent of the total number.
