( ვ8 ) and spelling. The same process may be followed with respect to mathe matical terms of importance, To disarm all opposition, the two systems may be made optional. As regards the higher examinations, I would not interfere with them at present, but prepare to wait to see how the change in the Entrance course works. I am opposed to add any fresh subject in the F.A. which appears to be already overburdened. I would, however, allow the F. A. students to read the optional subjects, and answer questions on them in their own vernacular. The proposal to introduce Bengali as part of Sanskrit by reducing the quantity of the latter subject will, I think, impose an additional burden. It is a fallacy of the mathematical process of reasoning to say that if the number of pages to be read of both Sanskrit and Bengali be the same as that of the former now, the burden would remain the same. There cannot be a shadow of doubt that practically the burden would be considerably increased, for the students will have to master two languages instead of one : the fallacy would clearly appear if one were to propose to introduce Latin by diminishing the extent of textbooks in English. The Bangiya Sahitya Parishad would very greatly advance the cause of education in this country, should they succeed in inducing the University to adopt this change. The present Vice-chancellor who has spent the best portion of his life in inparting and watching education in this country has had to observe in his first convocation speech that the graduates are not found to be engaged in the pursuit of knowledge, as they are expected to be. The fact cannot but be admitted, though its cause has not been ascertained yet.
