( 49 ) opportunity of competing for the M. E. Scholarship. Here, I would point out, in passing, the significance of the fact that the single consideration of receiving a better training in English outweighs all considerations of pecuniary advantage. Now, if either of the proposed measures be introduced, the only incentive for these boys to join the H. E. School in the face of so many disadvantages, will be taken away from them. None of them will care any longer to join these schools below the third class and as it costs more to maintain the higher than the lower classes, the inevitable cqequence will be that the very existence of these institutions will be threatened. Now, in these days when government have deemed it fit to withdraw from high education and are busy in carrying out their policy, it would be extremely unwise to add to the disadvantage in which high education is already being placed by our rulers. 2. As to the second proposal, it has my hearty approval and I should further suggest that a paper on translation and composition similar to that now set in the Entrance Examination be set in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations and that the candidates be required te pass in their paper indepfdently of the paper in the second language. I should also propose that unlike what is done at present, candidates for the Entrance Examination be also required to passin the paper on vernacular translation and composition independently of the paper on the second language. For the present, let this serve as a stimulus both to the boys and their teachers to pay greater attention to their vernacular language until we can see our Y: introduction of reforms involving greater changes in the established order of things. have the honour to be SIR, Your most obedient Servant, HAR CHARAN RAY From *?్య 3O BABU HAR MoHAN SEN, Head-master, Barisal Zillah School.
