( t ) main argument (this know from personal eonversation with him on many as occasion) for introducing that system was, that the Middle Vernacular Scillofals generally turn out to be the best scholars; but I need not point out to such an intelligent body of gentlemeh as you are that, those that will get scholarships at any examination are far superior to their fellows. I have not much objee, tion to teaching general Geography, Arithmetic and Algebra in Bengali if parts of a subject may be allowed to be taught in one language and the remaining parte in another language ; but I do not approve at all that Geometry and History should be taught in Bengali even up to the 4th class. In my humblė opinion, History (including Physical Geography and Science Primer) is one of the best means of teaching literature; so, to permit the boys tes read it in Bengali means to weaken them in English. When Geometry forms a part of the curriculam of studies for the F. A. Examination, and that must be taught in English, I camot approve that up to the Entrance or the Middle Scholarship Examinations, it should be taught in Bengali. The boys who were promoted to the fourth class having passed the Middle Vernacular Scholarship examination and thus finishing the whole of the Book I. with deductions and riders, did not understand a bit of Geometry when they began to read it in English; in fact, the labour bestowed upon that subject in the sixth and fifth classes by usand the boys, was entirely lost, and we had to commence Geomatry de no po in the fourth class. This was the case not with one or two boys nor even with half the boys, but with the whole batch; (with one or two exceptions), and I found this not in one or two years, but every year of the period of twelve years mentioned above. I fear, similar will be the fate of the F. A. students, if Geometry be taught in Bengali up to the Entrance Examination. Again, there are very few technical terms in Mathematics up to the Entrance Examination some of which are equally difficult to learn both in Bengali and English, LLL LLLLLL AqSTTDDBDDBESDDD DDSS DDBBDS DDBDLLBDBDS uDiDBS DSDBDS &e. are not, in my humble opinion, a whit easier than Fellowship, Simple Interest, Compound Interest, Involution, Equation, Gnomon, Square &e. I approve of your second proposal entirely. lf this proposal be accepted by the Syndicate, it will not only benefit the students, but further the progress of theyernacular literature. have the honor to be SIR, Your most obedient Servant ЈосовAмонu BнADRA, Head Master.
