( 6o ) in the B. A. Examination, and a fourth part in the F. A., but, as if that was not enough, its real proportionate value will be found to stand more than doubly as high, seeing that the examination in other subjects is, to no inconsiderable extent, one in English as well, not excepting Mathematics and even Sanskrit, which latter may be said to have, of late years, got within a measurable distance of the anything but welcome position-on its own account, and for Bengali-of Anglo-Sanskrit minus Sanskrit. With all this incense burnt at the altar of English, it a voracious, youth-killing, life-consuming monster, and I would not add to its deadly fatality by its eviction in favour of other media of instruction and other vehicles of thought. With regard to the proposal to make the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, I beg to say that I cannot bring myself to approve of it, and that for the following re2SOS - (r) Education up to the Entrance standard means seven years or more of intellectual training-a pretty long period for the study of one of these languages, a study to be followed up, supplemented, and perfected by as much of classical learning as the student acquire in the course of his subsequent academic career. The barbarisms and solecisms that disfigure the pages and columns of many a Bengali book, newspaper, and periodical of the present day are traceable, not so much to the neglect of Bengali as to the want of a decent grounding in Sanskrit. (2) To propose an addition to the curriculum of studies in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, particularly in the former, would be to propose something akin to death to already mercilessly overburdened young people. Should the proposal be made at all, it ought, in my opinion, be coupled with a requisition to reduce the number of text-books in English and to lighten students' work in some of the other subjects. The alternative proposal, viz. that in favour of Composition and Translation, need also be accompanied with such requisition. Under no circumstances, in my opinion, should a vernacular language be proposed in substitution of Sanskrit. Such a proposal would only defeat its own object, and I am glad of the support you give to my view.
