( 73 ) vernacular. Let not, therefore, the Parishad delude themselves with the conviction that they have done a good day's work if they have secured a hearing for the above scheme of theirs. In accepting such a copromise, they will be ruining the cause they have so nobly and so worthily espoused. For the true needs of the people, for the true ends of education, there must be a thorough recognition of the language of the people. The path of duty lies clear before them let them employ all the arts of organisation in order to achieve this great end; and it must not be forgotten that they may hope to find their cherished object accomplished only after years of discussion and opposition; for it is not in a day that the University will shake of its innate conservatism and portentous lethargy. In conclusion, I crave pardon of the illustrious body whom I address, for the improper tone adopted in the present letter. It is only my zeal for the cause espoused by the Parishad that has carried me beyond the limits of a formal reply. Dated II, Krishnaram Boses Lane Shambazar, Calcutta, the 31st January 1895, GENTLEMEN, I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your Circular dated the 5th January 1895 on the subject of making the Vernacular Languages, instead of English, the medium of instruction in our schools in History, Geography and Mathematics. Before addressing myself to the two questions with reference to which you have specifically desired to have my views, I beg to state that the pur. posed plan was practically tried for some time in the Sanskrit Collegiate School up to the 4th Class and to lay before you some of the advantages that followed and the objections that were raised against the system.
