If the addition be made without lowering the standard in these subjects then the proposal would impose an additional burden on candidates taking up Sanskrit, Arabic or Persian, without imposing a corresponding burden on the rest of the F. A. and B. A. examinees. This will consequently deter candidates from taking up these subjects. It is needless to say that, in my opinion, it is not desirable to lower the existing standard in these Languages. I would therefore recommend the introduction of Wernaculars for all F. A. and B. A. candidates including B. course candidates and also such candidates in A. course as do not take up Languages at all. The introduction of Wernacular Language as a compulsory subject is more desirable for such candidates as take up no second Ianguage at all, than for those who take up a Classical Language closely allied to their own Vernaculars. My experience is that a Sanskrit Scholar can very easily acquire mastery over the Bengali Language if he tries to do so, and the task becomes very much easier if he has, besides, a competent knowledge of English. I am therefore of opinion that the arguments in favour of introducting a vernacular language as part of the F. A. and B. A. Examinations in addition to Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian, apply with greater force so far as B. course candidates and such A. course candidates as do not take up a language are concerned. I may remark here, in passing, that seeing that there are European and Eurasian candidates whose vernacular is English, the test in Vernacular Languages at the F. A. and B. A. Examinations cannot be made by setting a paper on any appointed text-books in the Vernaculars, as this would entail European and Eurasian candidates being examined twice over in the same subject-English I would therefore suggest that instead of appointing textbooks in Vernacular Languages at the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, a paper of translations may be set requireing the candidates to translate into their respective Vernacular, passages in the languages taken up by the candidates as their second languag at the F.
