( 99 ) From BABU SARADA CHARAN MITRA, M. A. B. L. &c. &c. TO BABU RABINDRA NATH TAGORE, HON’BLE JUSTICE GOOROODAS BENERJEE, M. A. D. L. PANDIT RAJANIKANT GUPTA, MR. NANDAKISHNA BOSE, M. A. c. s. AND BABU HIRENDRANATH DATTA, M. A. B. L. Dated, Calcutta the 21st January 895. SRS, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of yours dated the 5th January 1895, and to state in reply that in my opinion the time is come for modifying the edincational policy inaugurated in 1854. I think that know. ledge should be imparted through the medium of the vernacular languages especially in History, Geography, Mathematics and the Physical Sciences, English and Sanskrit should be made compulsory merely for examination in the languages. In the middle English Examination, students are now examined in English only as a language; they are required to answer questions in History, Geography, Mathematics and the Sciences in their vernaculars. This, I think, is working in the right direction. I also think that the system now followed in the Middle English Exami. nation may with great advantage be adopted in all the University Examinal tions including the F. A. and the B. A. As soon as it is announced that the system will be extended to the higher examinations I believe books written in the vernacular languages will be published in numbers and translations from the English and the French Books will be available. I have the honor to be Sirs, Your most obedient servant SARADA CHARAN MITRA.
