অষ্টাদশ অধ্যায় । ({ পুরের অর্থাৎ বর্তমান গড়ের মাঠের মধ্য দিয়া আসিয়া, খিদিরপুর কুলীবাজারের মধ্য দিয়া গঙ্গায় লহিত মিশিবে—এইরূপ কল্পনাই ছিল । * যে অংশটা ইতিপূৰ্ব্বে খনিত হইয়াছিল, তাহাতে দীর্ঘকাল বায় হওয়ার ও নবাব আলিবর্দি খায় সহিত—মহারাষ্ট্র-বর্গীদের সন্ধি স্থাপিত হওয়ায়, এই খাল অসম্পূর্ণ অবস্থায় পরিত্যক্ত হয় । পরবর্তীকালে নবাব সেরাজউদৌলার আক্রমণ সময়েও ইংরাজের এই খাত আত্ম-রক্ষার উপায় স্বরূপে ব্যবহার করিতে পারেন নাই । ১৭৯৯ খ্ৰীঃ অব্দে এই খাত, সহরের জঞ্জাল ও ময়লা দ্বারা ভরাট করিয়া ফেলা হয় । যে সমস্ত মাটী স্তুপাকারে কলিকাতার দিকে সঞ্চিত হইয়াছিল, তাহ সমতল করিয়ু “বৰ্ত্তমান সার্কিউলার রোডের” প্রাণপ্রতিষ্ঠা হয় । মাকুইস অব ওয়েলেসলির শাসনকালে, এই বিস্তৃত পন্থার দুই পার্শ্ব বৃক্ষাদি স্বারা শোভিত হওয়ায়, ইহা প্রাচীন কলিকাতার—সৌন্দর্য্যবৰ্দ্ধন করে। অনেক পদস্থ ইংরাজ, সন্ধ্যায় ও সকালে চেরিয়ট গাড়ী চড়িয়া, এই পথে বেড়াইতেন। তখন চৌরঙ্গীর অবস্থা এত সমুন্নত হয় নাই। কারণ ইহার অধিকাংশ স্থান বন-জঙ্গলে পরিপূর্ণ ছিল। এরূপ শুনিতে পাওয়া যায়—যে এই মারহাট। খাতের অপর পারে যথেষ্ট দমুভিয় ছিল । {
- The ditch was to extend for seven miles, forming a semicircle round three sides of the Town, the fourth side being protected by the river. It was begun in 1742 at Chitpur and followed the line of Circular. Road southward as far as Jaun Bazar Street, here it turned to the southwest and was intended to take a line which would have crossed the Chowringee Road at the Junction of Middleton Street and continuing the same direction would have reached the River at Hastings about where the Commissariat Bmildings and Jetties are situated—Kathleen Blychyndens's Old Calcutta.
+ The country on the other side of the ditch was infested by bands of dacoits. When the Marquis Wellesley, whose influence gave a great stimulus to the improvement of the roads, came to Calcutta, the "deep broad Mahratta ditch” existed near the present Circular Road. It was then commenced to be filled up by depositing the filth of the town in it. The earth excavated in forming the ditch says a writer of that day, was so disposed on the inner or townward side, as to form a tolerably high road, along the margin of which was planted a row of trees and this constituted the more frequented and fashionable part about town.Another writer says in 1802—"Now on the Circular Road of Calcutta the young and the sprightly and the opulent during the fragrance of morning, in the
