The best translations of Meghaduta in any European language are a metrical German version by the late Prof. Max Miller and the German prose-rendering by the scholar Schuetz, both of which unfortunately are out of print. The version of Schuetz was dedicated to our great countryman, Raja Radhakanta Deb, who had financially helped the poor German scholar when the latter had fallen on evil days owing to blindness and old age. The Kumarasambhavam was probably the next great work of Kalidasa. In its present shape it consists of 17 Cantos; but out of these only the first eight were written by Kalidarsa himself-a. fact recognised by Mallinatha who commented on these cantos only. The rest is the work of an inferior hard, for it is inconceivable that Kalidasa could ever have been guilty of errors of style and diction with which the last nine cantos of Kumarasambhavam abound.
