কাৰ্ত্তিক ১৮০১ sumadiwm LETTER OF REWID CHARLES VOYSEY TO BABU RAJNARAIN BOSE, PRESI]) ENT OF THE ADI BRAHIMO SAMAJ, CAMI)EN IIU) USE DUTLW'I(H S. C, AUGUST 17, 1879. My DEAR sIR, 尊 事 輸 漸 尊 I THANK you with all my heart for your most kind and gratifying letters and also for your valuable present of books. * * * I will also forward copies to Mr. Newman and Miss Cobbe, if the latter has returned home from the continent. J will ask you kindly to accept from me a parcel of my works which very likely you have The purely Theistic portions of them you will most likely agree with : but 1 commend 7th volunte of “Sling and Stone" which deals There are 11)t K. These chapters will show how entirely baseless is Keshub Baboo's reverenco for Jesus even as a Prophet and a man like ourselves. You will do me great kindness by giving publicity to these chapters and causing them to be read. the reprinting of them, if my name as author be duly attached. There are only two men professing to be “religious teachers" in this country, or for the matter of fact, even in America, who have attacked the liol of Christondom in this way. These two are Professor F. W. Newman and myself. The Unitarians are either unwilling or afraid to do so. Notice the attitude of Mr. Dall on this point. I will further ask of you the favor of conveying to the members of the Adi Brahmo Samaj my deep sense of their sympathy and good will in assuring me of their approval of my reply to Baboo Keshub Chunder Sen. It gratifies me beyond words to know that you are all so faithfully resolved on maintaining the purest Theism and in resisting the encroachments of an insidious but emasculated Christianity. The real orthodox Christianity goes straight to the mark and makes Jesus its God. It is a genuine o او ! ما يلي } -, .” , '. "A歡 #. o o f : J h f y r * , , ' • r مبني من " " و " " ( ، به " ! ! Sen is a poor hybrid and essentially idolatrous, Professor Newman's discourse in which he alludes to Baboo Keshub Chunder Sen I also send you. IIe told me the other day that he suspected K. C. S., of Christian proclivities years ago and always feared he had no depth of sound Theism. I am very thankful to learn that K. (!. S. has lost his influence and can no! do any farm to the Brahmo Samaj. Your letter gratifies me still more in reference to the subject of social reform. It always appeared to me a blunder to mix up two such wholly distinct things as Religious Belief and Sociai Customs. Moreover individual exertion is one thing and corporate interference quite another. If is well to encourage individuals to do their best in amending, altering or removing old customs which are proved to be pernicious. But it is wrong to imperil the influence of a Churci, or Religious Society by making it the obnoxious opposer of, or You want to make all men Theists irrespective of their customs (and Caste) in other matters ; and if you draw a hard and fast line to destroy interferer with, established customs, customs you"shut out a vast body of persons who would otherwise have listened thankfully to your religious teaching. You have, in my opiuion done wisely and well in keeping free of such impediments and in leaving Social Refornis to your individual members. I reinember your valuable letture ou Brahmoism with great pleasure and again I must congratulate and praise you on your devoted fidelity to the One Living and True God whom, while we live, we will worship alone without rival or mediator. With regard to Scripture texts my object in choosing them is generally to shew that I value the Old Book on certain rational grounds, but I not unfrequently take as texts passages from modern literature to show that I have no superstitious regard for the Bible. 称 * 帧 * I write with a warm heart and much res pect and gratitude.
