For God's providence often thus sends afflictions upon men in order to bringġem to consideration and repentance. Nebuchadnezzar was thus restored to his king dom, which was more magnificent and prosperous than ever. It is probable he governed his people more wisely and justly, more meekly and kindly than he had before done. It is even said, by some ancient historians, that Evil-Merodach, his son, not having ruled well during his regency, his father immediately on his recovery most justly punished him by casting him into prison. It is supposed that he was confined in the same prison with Jehoiachin, the captive king of Judah, who had beén imprisoned t for about thirty-six years.
