194 together his armies in order to fight against them. But Cyaxares, king of Media, sent to Persia for his nephew Cyrus to come and assist him in the war. Cyrus came accordingly, conquered the Babylonians, and killed their king in the fourth year of his reign. Laboroso-archod, the son of Neriglissar, was the next king. He was so vicious and cruel, that some of his subjects put him to death when he had reigned but nine months. His successor was Nabonadius, or Belshazzar. Belshazzar was the son of Evil-Merodach, and grandson of Nebu chadrezzar. His mother Nitocris was alive, and was a woman of great talent and energy. She is said to have caused many fine buildings to be raised in Babylon, and to have managed public affairs with much discretion, while her son, who was a weak and worthless prince, spent his time in effeminate pleasures. It is probable that Daniel remained high in office at the court of Babylon under all those successive monarchs.
