198 Elam, on the banks of the river Ulai. It was two hundred and fifty-two miles east of Babylon. Daniel was sent there to attend to some public buri ness. Perhaps he was governor of the province of Elam, which was then a part of the Babylonian empire, though it shortly afterwards was joined to Persia. It is said that Daniel built a large and beáutiful palace in Shushan, in which he resided. Here, on the banks of the Ulai, in the third year of king Belshazzar's reign, the Prophet had another vision. The Spirit of God, in a peculiar manner, drew away his attention from external objects, and fastened it upon a sort of moving picture, which was brought before his mind. “A ram with two horns appeared by the river, pushing eastward, and northward, and southward, and no beast could stand before it.
