The goat was an emblem of the Macedonian, or Grecian empire; and the horn between its eyes was figurative of a future king of Macedon, Alexander the Great so distinguished, who should break up and put an end to the MedoPersian empire. Alexander, it was further declared, would die young, and then his empire would be divided into four smaller kingdoms, under so many of his principal Generals. The precise meaning of the little horn was not so clearly txplained, but it is supposed, on good grounds, to have a reference to the Romans. At the time when Daniel saw this vision, the city and temple of Jerusalem were in ruins ; but it was therein shewn him that they should shortly be rebuilt, and would remain during successive MedoPersian and Grecian monarchies.
