260 they would remain standing, and the worship of the temple be continued for seventy weeks. (A day, in the prophecies, usually means a year; and a węek, a week of years, or seven years. In this mode of reckoning, 70 weeks are 490 years.) At the end of that time, “Messiah, the Prince,” would appear, and offer himself a sacrifice for the sins of men. After this, “ the abomination which maketh desolate,” or the standards of an idolatrons nation, would be gathered about Jerusalem, the daily sacrifice would be taken away, and the city itself be destroyed. Jerusalem was accordingly soon rebuilt, and the rest of the prophecy duly fulfilled. At the exact time fixed, Jesus Christ, the Messiah,the person appointed by God to the office of a Saviour, and the Prince of Peace, appeared, and was offered as a sacrifice on the cross, that he might save and bless those who should trust and believe in him.
