94 the foot of mount Nebo, in Moab; others came from among the pleasant groves of Damascus; and others from the valleys of Ammon, where the people worshipped an idolo called Moloch, and cruelly sacrificed to him their own children. Bands of musicians were scattered among the crowd, carrying instruments of music of strange and peculiar forms. Psalteries and small harps were held in the haud, or thrown across the shoulder when played upon. These, with the flutes and dulcimers, gave out sweet sounds; but the cornets, trumpets, and cymbals were spirited and loud. At first, all was silent. The multitude of people in the plain stood with their eyes fastened on the golden image. The river Eupbrates rolled by, covered with boats and Messels, and bordered with willows, and the towers of the temples and palaces of Babylon arose in the distance. Presently a herald came forward, and called, in a loud voice to the people, commanding them all, in the name of king Nebuchaɖnezzar, to fall down and wor ship the golden image as soon as a stated signal
