Srimati Svarna Kumari Devi's last րսեհiւմ: work is Gatha, which is now before us. It is a collection of four beautiful idylls and as such, a nevelty in Bengali literatnre. Its poetry, as a contemporary justly remarks “is the poetry of genuine heart felt pathos—powerful from its sublimity and affecting from its tenderness,” and its versification is delicate and sweet.” It is difficult to single out any one passage when so many challenge our admiration. But the best piece in the book is certainly that with which it concludes. The story on which this truly pathetic piece is based is very simple. A young man leaving behind his beloved and charming wife goes to a distant foreign country to fight the battle of life, Fie chieves success and sets ಉಂr home. He, however, enceunters the grave perils of a shipwreck on the return journey, and reaches his destination just in time to clasp in his agonised bosom the almost lifeless from of his wife.
