( xvi.) 'essential kindliness and simplicity of Babu Wihar inla Mitra, his business acumen, his religion and spirituality, and his literary inolinations, as well as his charity and wealth are derived directly from Sadhu Gokul, and the century and a half that lies between them, serves but to accentuate the likeness. Babu Vihari Lala is also distinguished for a width and liberality of thought, a mental balance and firmness of spirit, all his own. These gifts of so high a value during the present period of change and stress and mental and moral turmoil, he has ever turnod to the service and dvantage of bis fellow-men, and of the Government under which his and his house found reedom, peace and opportunity for the achievement of a great and abiding prosperity. Apart from his modernity, he recalls in many ways the great men of the noble and princely mercantile families of Florence and of Venice in the time of their glory. We have the same vivid interest in generosity regarding the execution of art and literature and public works. As a patron of learning, as a learned man himself, and a craftsman of the pen Babu Vihari Lala Mitra has earned a reputation of the first order. His work as a citizen of no mean city, as a prominent member of society, and a loyal sand zealous supporter of the Government, and of law and order, as well as a man truly loyal to his country is of an equally high order. It has been done without ostentation this good work, but it has been done excellently.
