A few of the acts of liberality that stand to the credit of this true and loyal citizen, have been made public, thanks to the acknowledgments which the Government makes in the case of donations for public works. In 1908 he gave Rs. 10,000 towards the construction of Surgical Ward for the Shambhu Nath Pundit Hospital, Bhowanipur. In the following year the funds of the Bengal Branch of THE LADY MINTo's INDIAN NgRSING Association were the better by Rs. 10,00 from tbe, same source. Besides these, another sum of Rs. 10,000 was paid into the Government Treasury for any work of public utility. He subscribed a thousand to the Italian Earthquakc Fund, for his sympathy and generosity were far from being confined to his own people. The contributions to local charities, schools, distress funds, earthquake funds are too numerous to quote. These charities took the form of both cash and kind, and their money value would run into lakhs of rupees. Yet this money value is small compared with the kindliness with which the gifts were bestowed and the warm syunpathy that prompted the gifts. All this leaves unnoticed the daily charities of the Mitra house. These can hardly be known. The head of the house is as modest as he is generous, and it is not often that his left hand knows what his right hand does. But these charities form only the fringe of the garment of his worthiness. The solid work done
