The authorities, too, have been forced to scrutinise many books calculated to work great evil. We may be confident that they have read these books with pleasure, and have recognised the author as one who has deserved well of the State. But Babu Vihari Luala had done much sound and valuable literary work before the development of the unfortunate necessity for writing these tracts of the times. The whole Hindu world, and indeed the whole world of letters, owes him a heavy debt of gratitude for his monumental translation of that great book of Hindu philosophy, the “Yoga WASHISTA,” made some 18 years ago. The translation, an admirable one, is published in four stout volumes, the typography and binding of the best. It cost years in time, thousands in money, an infinity of labour, and demanded the deepest eruditions, This book Babn Vihari Lala did not place upon the market, as many far less deserving are placed daily. Generous with the work of brain and hands as with his wealth, more anxious for the spreading of useful knowledge and the advancement of literature, than covering of his expense, he gave the book away.
