( xxiv.) institution which is doing noble work amongst the homeless, helpless and hopeless of Calcutta on an assured basis. That alone gives Vihari Lala Mitra priority of claim on the good-will of the citizen of Calcutta. It is a source of great satisfaction to us to know that Vihari Lala's generous action on be half:ot the "Refuge' has not gone unrecognized by the Government of Bengal, Not that Vihari Lala was actuated by any selfish motives of self-advancement when making the gift, but because the recognition by the Government of the good work he is doing in our midst, without the flourish of trumpets, single-heartedly and with the sole object of serving humanity, has its seal of approval on a course of action other wealthy citizens would do well to imitate. lin the Coronation Banquet he organised for the poor, Vihari Lala Mitra struck a higher note of patriotism. He made, so to say, their King visible to the poor of Calcutta. He showed that where the rich in a community employ their wealth in promoting the well-being of the people, the poor are not left in all their desolation on festive occasions, More than that, he roused in the poor of Calcutta those sentimenss of loyalty to the King-Emperor which in all conditions of life, make for good citizen ship. There could be no greater service to a com. munity than to help it to fashion its life after the models of good citizens. We are sure that Vihari Lala Mitra's services in this direction are worthy of recognition.
