What his ancestors earned by sterling work and left to him, Vihari Lala Mitra has used, in the best possible manner, for the greatest good of the greatest number. If the gods favoured the founder of the Edouse, as tradition says, they have none the less smiled on his great-grandson, Vihari Lala, by endowing him with a feeling heart. There is also no lack of worldly goods. In his case, the saying has come true that it is more blessed to give than to receive. As a patron of arts and learning, as generous and ready subscriber to works of charity, as a strong supporter of law and order, as a loyal and earnest advocate of the British Raj, and as a fearless enemy of Extremism, Vihari Lala Mitra claims special attention. As an orthodox Hindu he wields a powerful influence in Bengal. In politics, Vihari Lala Mitra has been ever on the side of orderly progress. His two tracts “Prakriti Rahashya.' and "Bideshi Rahashya” are epitomes of P: wisdom. A firm believer in the benefits of Britis rule in India, Vihari Lala Mitra has brought all his eloquence to bear upon the questions of the day in the attempt to wear away young Indians from the dangerous paths of sedition.
