At a later date Maharaja Gopal Sing wanted to get back the God, and perhaps Sadhu Gokul would not and could not have objected to it, but for a strange and divine intervention. The God, it is said, appeared to the Maharaja in a dream and expressed Himself so well content with the devotion and service of the Mitters that be refused to return to Bishnupur. Madan Mohun thus remained at Bagbazar. Indeed, were He still at inaccessible Bishnupur, the obeisance of millions could not have been paid to Him as is the case to-day. Sadhu Gokul endowed a big Zemindari in Burdwan for the perpetual worship and service of the God. Gradually Gokul Mitter amassed so much wealth that on the occasion of his son's marriage was spent the fabulous sum of 10 lakhs, equivalent to-day to at least treble that sum.
